‘Women, Stereotypes and Condoms.’ by Lindsey Williams

Girls carry their whole lives in their bags. Credit cards, lipstick, mascara, eyeliner, money, and the list can go on, but who would think to carry around condoms? Woman who carry condoms, are they slutty or are they smart? Being sexually cautious is one of the greater issues we face in society today. Would you rather be safe and carry condoms around? Or not, and put yourself at risk for anything?

Recently I met a female who carried condoms around in her wallet. I thought to myself Damn she really must be anticipating “getting it in” with someone, I thought only guys did that. Later on I re-thought my statement thinking maybe it may have been a bit ignorant to just assume she was a hoe. Maybe she was just trying to be SAFE. What do you think?

Asking around on a college campus located in Queens, NY, I received multiple male opinions on this subject…

“I wouldn’t trust a female carrying around condoms. Any dude that trust’s a girl who hands him a condom before sex is a fool, whether he has protection or not.”

“I think a girl who carries condoms probably has a lot of sex, and that can never look too good…but hey, if that’s how she gets down that’s her.”

“I mean, whether she is trying to be safe or not, it still looks bad.”

I also asked multiple females what their opinion was on this matter…

“She probably has a lot of sex if she’s carrying condoms. I mean why else would you carry condoms around. Clearly she has no boyfriend because if she did she wouldn’t be carrying those, and most likely since she is carrying them around, she must have intentions on f**king whoever she see’s…”

“It is not normal for a girl to do that, and any girl who does is probably very sexually active. More power to her for being safe, but that’s no excuse for having intentions on having random sex…”

It is safe to say that a female carrying condom’s has a negative connotation. It is very easy to jump to the conclusion that this girl is promiscuous but would you rather be stuck with a child or a disease? Or would you rather be with a girl that was smart enough to have contraception when you forgot or didn’t have any? If a girl can carry around birth control in her wallet it’s just the same as a condom. It is PREVENTION and being SMART, not necessarily slutty.

There are female condoms made especially made for females just as there are the ones specially made for males. Regardless of her sexual intentions she is aware and prepared for anything and in the 21^st century, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

There is nothing wrong with a female carrying a condom around in her wallet. That condom could have been in her wallet for weeks or even months before she actually used it. I personally don't carry one around, but i do keep some trojans in my dorm room that I got for free around campus in case i need them or if a one of my roommates need. I've never had to use my own since I took them, but on the other hand I don't think I want to be having sex with the type of guy who doesn't think to always have a condom on him either. Also, its probably safer for the girl to have her own condom on hand for guys out there who want to pull out a cheap brand that the female doesn't trust.

Personally I feel the people quoted in this article are the ones most at risk. Ignorance is one of the biggest issues young adults have. I believe that all women need to carry condoms whether they intend on engaging in sex or not. A girl doesn't even need to be sexually active to do so. Being safe is the priority. I do not carry them myself but I also have no problem going to get some. Some people are uncomfortable with purchasing them but what happens when "that moment" arrives and neither party is prepared? Also having a steady partner does not constitute or excuse lack of protection. People in relationships are in denial. Especially those in long term relationships. Fact is people cheat! Even worse they are less likely to confess to their partners. So lack of communication in addition to infidelity can lead to a trusting partner catching something because they don't use protection. I can go on but..yeah. People need to wake up. If you don't protect yourself who will? It is very unfair to place this burden on men alone. Gender equality should be universal. Oh yeah I said I was done right? LOL Bye

I like how she took her time to write about something that people just judge and dont take the time to think deeply about.I do believe that a woman who carries a condom around in her purse doesn't have to be a "hoe" just for that matter. Since it takes two people to have sex, I strongly believe that it does not matter which has the condom; it''s actually very safe of them women to carry one around just in case.

Honestly, you never know how long that female had that condom in her wallet. I have female friends who have condoms on deck just to have for maybe when a friend needed one or for themeselves but that doesn't mean they restock their bags with condoms every week or so. On average if a condom is stored properly it can last to about 2-5yrs. #SafeSexisGreatSex

I think it is smart for a woman to be prepared. i totally agree that if a woman can carry birth control with her, why not a condom,. if the man is not prepared the woman should be! And if neither of y'all are prepared, it aint going down! Eff what people think, everybody needs to be safe! Good job Linds :*

A woman's body is precious. it should be protected at all times. our bodies are open to the world so we need to be cautious. especially with so many viruses and diseases spreading rapidly. a woman who carries condoms around wants to ensure her safety. why leave the fate of your health in another persons hands? it kills me that just because a female wants to protect herself she is labeled a hoe. if she must wait till marriage then he should too. so we all will be fumbling around foolishly in the dark on our honeymoons. lol. but seriously it not like on most cases a woman who carries them around goes up to every man to use them. NO! she is the back up plan. if he doesn't have she will supply. because after all NO GLOVE NO LOVE!!!. and besides who wants to kill the mood because HE is unprepared!!?

It's unfortunate that women who carry condoms get looked at so negatively. No woman should leave it solely up to any man to protect her own body. Preparation is not just for random sex, even in "exclusive" relationships, if a woman wants to use protection then it's ok if she ensures that it is available when the time presents itself. It is very ironic that women who try to protect themselves by carrying condoms get looked at as having intentions of having sex with randos and "must be slutty" but those who don't carry condoms are apparently "safe." Seems kind of backwards to me.

Always be prepared.

I've been carrying around a condom wherever I went for years even when I was a virgin. I never saw it as being a problem in fact it's something I feel like everyone should do male or female. I'd rather be safe whether I randomly were to decide to have sex with a guy, or if I were in the terrible situation of being raped, it's better then STD's or an unwanted baby. I'm even more surprised people in Queens were saying this, since Queens being apart of NYC, where cities are known for higher crime rate and more likely for a bad situation to happen. It doesn't make one a whore or a slut just for being safe.

I truly think there's nothing wrong with a female carrying a condom around. I find it amazing that there's so many negative connotations that have been associated with it. Years ago condoms were not being used around; that was when AIDS and HIV were prevalent. Now that people are taking precautions and protecting themselves it's a problem? Really?! Honestly in the world we live in today everything that females do, especially in terms of sex will be viewed negatively so it's expected. It's a shame that women even have to do such a thing because men are not being responsible and carrying them around themselves. I myself have female friends who carry them around and have said that they have had situations where they man they were seeing did not have one. So why put all the blame on females? Men must hold the responsibility of carrying a condom around because it goes on our phallus. To put that responsibility in someone else's hand is folly. Above all trust yourself because you never know what that female may have done with that condom. Many men have been trapped because of that situation.
