Who’s on Deck has been on a hiatus but is now bigger than ever.
To commemorate the long wait, we had to come back bigger and better with the dish on four up and coming artists who are ready to take the music world by blast.
Saba Jenga, Blackway, Don C, and Dré Major are the latest signees to Hilo Entertainment, a record company that places emphasis on ARTISTRY, DEDICATION, & NOVELTY as opposed to the prodigality and conformity that has become all the more expected within the industry.
First up is Saba Jenga, in an era void of a female hip hop artist of substance, upcoming artist Saba Jenga brings a presence to the industry as if she was born to do it. Representing the DMV, she was born in the nation’s capitol and raised at times in Virginia, and later Gaithersburg, Maryland.
While she is heavily influenced by the sounds of Outkast, Lauren Hill, The Wutang Clan, Erykah Badu and Bustah Rhymes she is a unique songstress unlike other. With aspirations to change the world and someday be a famous hip hop leading lady, Saba began to start taking her craft seriously her sophomore year of college. While attending college at St. John’s University, Saba was forced into focusing on her music her sophomore year, due to a semester break. Since then, she has teamed up with HiLo Entertainment and up and coming producers, BoZone, and J-Dot Scott to bring a sound unprecedented to the game. A 90’s baby by birth, Saba’s melodic rhymes are very reminiscent to the flavor of her youth, but officially futuristic. With an upcoming EP on the way, listeners can expect a breath of fresh air from the radio’s usual suspects. The release of the projects first single “Butterfly in the Sky,” has gained Saba an enormous amount of attention amongst blogs, DJ’s and the New York City college scene.
Then we have the on the rise hip hop lyricist, Blackway. Blackway looks to open ears, eyes, mouths, minds and hearts with his music. Blackway was Born in Brooklyn, raised in Ghana, and currently lives in Baldwin, NY.
For as long as he can remember music has been just as essential to his life as food and water. You can almost hear his influences, which include Common, Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, Bob Marley, and Little Brother in his style of music. With very little singing capabilities, Hip Hop just always seemed like his thing. As a result of that, Blackway has been freestyling since the 4th grade, writing music since the 8th and began to take his craft seriously after moving to Baldwin, Long Island in 2007. After moving to Baldwin, Blackway gained a lot of friends who supported, nurtured and encouraged his music. Being the darkest one in his group of friends led to the stage name “Blackway”. The segment “way” was created through spelling his real name (Yaw) backwards. Currently he’s been making progress by working with various artists in Long Island and Brooklyn. Becoming a part of the record label HiLo Entertainment, has stretched Blackway’s talents in even further directions. Still claiming the Long Island movement known as Mass Effect, this lyricist brings an unprecedented cultural understanding of life and the hip hop game to the table.
Another Long Island native, Don C is an Italian rapper who’s lyrics tend to focus on the struggles and problems of everyday life. His subject matter is different than what one may generally hear nowadays in hip hop. His views tend to be different from what traditional society thinks. While other college graduates are consumed with getting any job, Don C believes it is important to go for your dreams while you can.
Last but certainly not least HiLo Ent. presents, Dré Major. Gospel upbringings have brought singer/songwriter Andre “Dré Major” Grier a long way. The Atlanta native’s soulful southern voice is just one of the talents that separates Dre Major from the rest of his contemporaries in the r&b industry.
Now in the bright city of New York and recording with HiLo Entertainment, Dré Major hopes to become a familiar voice fast. With influences like the Clark sisters and Luther Vandross, Dré Major blends the soul of the past with a contemporary twist. It wasn’t until College where Dré Major would make the decision to finally spread his wings with his vocal talent. While on the campus of the University of Virginia, Dré Major was able to develop his voice under an on-campus record label called Oluponya Records. After becoming musical director of the school’s premier hip hop/R&B a cappella group Remix, Dré would also set his sights on the director position of the University’s Black Voices Gospel Choir. He has done studio background vocals for Boyd Tinsley of the Dave Matthews Band and toured Italy, Spain and Slovenia with Robin Brown and The Triumphant Delegation. Brown, an Atlanta vocal coach whose previous vocal students include Usher, TLC, Monica, Beyonce, and Whitney Houston is also Dré Major’s vocal mentor. As his resume continues to build, so does his fan base. Expect an upcoming EP from this star to be in the year ahead.
Currently, HiLo’s projects include a compilation album appropriately named “Velvet Suite,” which is expected to be released in early 2012. Accompanying the album is a short narrative film featuring all of the “Who’s On Deck” gems mentioned above.
