Dating someone on campus…I know what you’re thinking: “Here he goes again…*insert heavy sigh*”
But no, it’s not even like that…
Don’t worry I will not be coming down on anyone with my judgements and preconcieved notions today. I’ll allow someone else to do it for me!
How do you know when it’s the right time to have sex?
This question should be answered by someone who has experienced college life, but is not too far removed so they’ll be able to easily relate.
Bry’Nt, an openly gay Hip Hop artist currently residing in NY, NY is the perfect candidate.
Bry’Nt began his solo career with the release of his controversial mixtapes “Porn Star” (2008) and “Porn Star II: The Director’s Cut” (2009). He would then go on to be featured on a series of collaborative efforts with many artists. He has also had the privilege to perform nationally and internationally opening for artists such as Fantasia, Teairra Mari, RuPaul, and DJ Class.
From interviews on Sirius Satellite Radio with DJ Kay Slay and Angela Yee, features in a number of magazines including Spin, Bleu, and Kontrol Magazine, having his own brand of condoms, starring in the independent film “Finding Me: Truth”, and being an OUTMusic Award nominee, Bry’Nt has put himself at the forefront of an underground movement known as “Out Hip-Hop;” which consists of openly gay, lesbian, and bi-sexual artists.
Bry’Nt grew an early interest in music growing up in Hartford, CT, and from this interest grew a passion. He and a couple of friends started a rap group called 3rd Degree. Although he was extremely expressive with his music, Bry’Nt was not comfortable with his sexuality at this point in his life. His sexuality remained a secret from his family, his friends, his group, and most importantly, his mother. It was at age 15 that Bry’Nt came to accept his sexuality, and this is where his music took a turn. Feeling that the images of the homosexual lifestyle in Hip-Hop music were poor, he wanted to portray a realistic one. With that he felt he needed to make music that was more “rainbow-friendly,” (a pun he developed to describe his style of music). Bry’Nt feels that a rapper’s sexuality shouldn’t define them, or put them in a separate category musically.
Here is what Bry’Nt had to say:
“There is no sure way to tell whether or not the time is right to have sex. In my opinion, it is one of those experiences in which you JUST KNOW if it’s right or not. But, something that will lead you closer to that answer is doubt. If there is absolutely NO DOUBT in your mind about your willingness to share your body with another person then that may be a clue. But, this takes close listening to your inner voice. Some choose to ignore that inner voice when they make decisions. Some even ignore it purposely so that making a bad decision is easier.
However, when that inner voice has a hint of reluctance or apprehension in regards to sexual activity, you probably aren’t ready to have sex. Maturity plays a HUGE part in this. It is easier to make this decision when you know the person you are considering having sex with. And I don’t mean know in the sense that you’ve met them and have had brief dialogue, but know them in the sense that, you’ve taken the time to figure out each other’s personality, your chemistry, and find out if you share the same morals and values.
In the instances where sex is used for recreational purposes, you have to be even more careful. Being ready might not mean being ready for the act of sex itself, or the many consequences that may come from recreational sex.
Again, if you have to do any second guessing, then you’re probably not ready. Just my opinion.“
Well put Bry’Nt. You know, it often gets harder and harder to hear our inner voices if we constantly disregard them. Hopefully things will change for the better for us all.
